In the video below, a Match.com “expert” provides what I believe to be some of the worst online dating advice there is. She urges users not to talk on the phone before they meet in person for their first date, because she believes that this will be an obstacle to establishing a connection and it will reduce the chances of them getting along. In reality, however, speaking on the phone, as I mentioned many times before, is one of the best and the most effective ways to establish that type of connection that would make you want to look forward to meeting each other in person, rather than feel like you are meeting a total stranger. It’s ok if you are a little nervous or awkward to talk on the phone for the first time. It’s normal to feel that way, and overcoming this nervousness is part of the experience. Unless you are in your teens, you should be mature enough to handle a phone conversation and you should be actually excited about it. And if that phone conversation doesn’t go well, there is / was no reason to meet in person in the first place. I tried to avoid criticizing the dating advice provided by others, but this type of advice is so damaging, that I just couldn’t resist.
